Head of the Department

The current Head of Department is Prof. Peter TAYLOR.

The Department

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics is a budget unit of the Faculty of Science and provides more that a quarter of the student load of the Faculty.

At present, there are 46 academic staff, 26 research staff, 7 administrative staff, 4 consulting centre staff, 5 IT staff, 2 staff are Fellows of the Australian Academy of Sciences.

The academic staff consists of:

The Statistical Consulting Centre staff consists of:

Melbourne is the host department of the new Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute and a new ARC Centre of Excellence in the Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems.

The Department has several very active research groups.

Computing Resources

The Department's computing facilities are based on an integrated network of Apple Macintoshes and UNIX machines. Most academic staff have an upper-end Mac in their office, with a few using UNIX workstations instead.

Teaching-related facilities include two PC Lab of 50 PC's.

Mathematical Sciences Library

Location

The library is situated within the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, in the Richard Berry Building (see a map), on the ground floor next to Lecture Theatre A. The Richard Berry Building is situated on the corner of Swanston St and Monash Rd (Gate 4).

Opening Hours

  • Throughout the academic year:
    • 9 am - 5:15 pm Monday - Friday
  • During the Long Vacation/Admissions Period, the opening hours are:
    • 9 - 1 pm and 2 pm - 5 pm Monday - Thursday
    • 9 - 1 pm and 2 pm - 4:30 pm Friday
  • Closed Saturday, Sunday and University Holidays
